  11. This folder contains software and a lab manual for use with
  12. my introductory computer science textbook:  _The Most Complex
  13. Machine: A Survey of Computers and Computing_ (AK Peters Ltd,
  14. Wellesley, MA. ISBN number  1-56881-054-7), published
  15. in July of 1995.  There is also an order form for the book.
  16. You will find, though, that you can get a lot out of the programs
  17. even without the book, since many of the basic ideas are explained
  18. in the lab worksheets.

  20. COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS:  Everything in this folder can be freely
  21. distributed for private, non-commercial use.  I stipulate, however,
  22. that this material should not be adopted for use in a course unless
  23. the book _The Most Complex Machine_ is also adopted.  This material
  24. can be included on inexpensive CD-ROM shareware collections.  It
  25. can be made available for downloading from FTP sites and on-line
  26. services, provided that no charge is made beyond such basic charges
  27. as connect time and membership fee.

  29. The lab manual is in PostScript form.  Although you can learn
  30. something about the programs by using them and by looking at the
  31. included examples, you will need to read the lab worksheets to really
  32. understand the programs.  (To use the manual, you will need some
  33. way of printing a PostScript file.  Apple LaserWriters come with
  34. a LaserWriter Utility that can be used to print PostScript files.
  35. The free utility Drop･PS from Bare Bones software can also be used.
  36. OzTeX, a free program that implements the TeX typesetting system,
  37. has a Send Postscript command for printing PostScript files.)
